Dr. Jyoti Narayana

Jyoti Narayana joined Shriners Hospital for Children, Portland in July 2011 as a mentored scientist in Dr. William Horton’s research laboratory. Jyoti’s work is supported by Growing Stronger. She is currently working on understanding the molecular mechanism of achondroplasia with focus on drug development. She received her Ph.D. in Molecular and Cell Biology from the University of Maryland, College Park while working with Professor Tom Porter in the area of molecular endocrinology. Jyoti was born in Kerala, India and grew up in a traditional South Indian family. Her family later moved to New Delhi where Jyoti attended high school, then to Kolkata where she spent her college years. She came to the US in 2004 to the University of Missouri, and transferred to University of Maryland, College Park to pursue her Ph.D. studies. While working on her Ph.D., Jyoti also made significant contribution to the teaching programs on her campus and demonstrated outstanding ability to teach. She has recently moved to Oregon for her post-doctoral training. She is passionate about biomedical research and wants to focus on research aimed at understanding the causes and cures of human diseases. Jyoti has varied interests. Cooking is her way of relaxing. She enjoys hiking and photography. She is trained in Indian classical vocal music. Badminton is her favorite sport, but she really enjoys watching a game of cricket with her husband. She is currently enjoying exploring Oregon and its hidden natural treasures.

Growing Stronger's support for Dr. Horton has helped him receive an NIH grant for his work. This means that Dr. Horton no longer needs Growing Stronger Support to continue Dr. Narayana's work that was initially supported by Growing Stronger.
